Diapers
There are all kinds of fabric that will work for diapers. Flannel, Birdseye, interlock/jersey, twill, stretch terry, woven terry, etc. Anything that is close to 100% cotton (no more than 20% poly) and is a strong, yet soft next to baby’s skin will work.
Check around your house for things you don’t use any longer. Cut up old flannel sheets or receiving blankets, check your husbands closet for old flannel shirts he no longer wears. How about that t-shirt drawer? You can also use microfleece for the layer next to the baby to keep baby dry.
Covers
PUL, Ultrex other waterproof fabric. Or water-resistant fabrics like fleece and wool. There is a HUGE difference in fleece out there. Be careful what you buy. I suggest you ONLY buy Malden Mills fleece. If your using a 2 layer cover use 200wt fleece, if you’re using a 1 layer cover, use 300wt or Windpro fleece. You cannot buy Malden Mills fleece in local fabric stores. You are pretty much going to have to buy online.

I just love this site!
I reciently was introduced to the world of cloth diapers, by other women on a board who said that they are the best. I was surprised to find that it would cost 15 to 20 dollars to purchase a single good quality diaper. I do a lot of sewing, so I instantly began looking for sites and patterns to help. This has been a wonderful place to get information.
Thank you!
I am interested in making “water proof bed pads” like the ones in Hospitals and nursing homes. Do you know what the material is for the water proofing?
Thanks Ellen
Hi – I want to embroidery some dish towels and was advised to get Birdseye Diaper fabric. However, from Babies R Us and other reviews from young mothers, I read that this diaper fabric is not very absorbant. If that is the case, what fabric would be a good choice? Thanks for looking and commenting.
Ellen,
The waterproof material on bed pads can be a couple different things. There is PUL (polyuerthane laminate, usually polyester fabric) and Procare. I have found decent prices on PUL at these sites:

http://www.celticclothswholesale.com
http://www.wazoodle.com
Another waterproof fabric is Procare, which you will only find at Wazoodle. I hope this helps.
